Default New Guy questions

Hey all,
After always riding metrics (almost exclusivelyy Goldwings) I pick up my first dresser. It is a 93 Anniversary edition #186 of 1340. Has 9k miles. It was the center piece inthe bar of a rather wealthy genlteman, who collects Harley Memorabilia. I love this bike, I have been looking for a replacement for my '84 wing ( I hate the newer wings, look more like a jet ski to me. My opinion, don't mean to offend.)
Anyhow, like I said I love this bike, it is totally stock which I would rather keep it pretty much that way. I intend to replace the intake, exhaust gaskets,cv breather to the metal one, and check the ign mod. while I am in there, mostly due to the age of them since their are still original. Now, to the point of all this. I do want to change to a K&N filter to let it breath a little. The mufflers are stock which I like, but I see Harley makes a stock replacement muffler and the way they describe it I think it is a little less restrictive than original. My thinking is that I can open up the intake with the filter slightly and open the exhaust slightly, I'm thinking these will be minor inprovements without drifting from stock to far. I am also going to change back to dino oil,he used syn. oil for first time last oil change and I have 2 very very minor leaks now. If that doens't help I will put in the good gaskets w/ adj. push rods. So, my questions, 1 does anyone have any experience with the replacment mufflers,2 any thoughts on my ideas,3 in reading past post I saw mention of drilling out some baffles, can anyone tell more of this, how much louder were they, and what else did you have do do to compensate for it. Sorry for being long winded, but I have a lot to learn about H.D's. I will say everybody speaks highy of the EVO which is a big reason I bought it. Thanks for a insight I can get.

Congratulations on the Evo purchase. There are a few things about certain years that can cause minor problems. Probably nothing to really worry about on your bike, except maybe the base gaskets.

Where are these minor leaks? If one is a base gasket, just bite the bullet and put new gaskets on now, 'cause it ain't going to cure itself, going back to dino oil or not.

Generally, opening up the intake and exhaust will require a little mixture adjustment.

Drilling out the baffles will increase the loudness, but usually not that much. And there are about a jillion aftermarket, as well as HD, replacement mufflers, so without knowing exactly which ones any advice won't mean much.

Welcome to the HD family! Owning a 1993 myself, I can make a couple of suggestions and recommedations.

1) Scrap the stock airbox and air cleaner. Go with either a Screaming Eagle, or one of the various quality aftermarket parts. You'll notice an immediate improvement.
2) Swap out the stock mufflers, and install a set of slipons. I wouldn't bother to drill or knock out the baffles. Lot's of good mfg's out there but it's getting difficult to find them for the 'older bikes'. Harley changed the way the mufflers attach to the exhaust pipes in 96 (I think).
3) Change out the stock cam. It, for lack of a better word...Sucks. I've got an Andrews EV27 in mine and I love it. There are other goodones out therealso. While you're in there, get rid of the crappy INA bearing and install a Torrington. You can reuse the pushrods, or cut them (with bolt cutters so you don't have to take down the top end)and install adjustables.
4) Consider an aftermarket igintion module, one with a higher rev limit. The stock Harley one shuts down just as the engine is building horsepower.
5) Keep the stock CV carb, but get it to someone who has a dyno and knows what the hell they are doing, and get it tuned.
6) You can get some more HP by raising the compression ratio slightly, either with pistons, or by milling the head. 9.5:1 is good for a street motor running premium pump gas.
7) Ride it like you stole it!!!!!!!

There are a lot of things that Harley did in 93 and then re-did in 94 and later. 93 is sort of a bastard year in many ways. Keep an eye on the main drive sprocket. It's know to loosen up and cause a small leak. Which, unless you track it back, will look like the primary cover is leaking. The cylinder base gaskets either leak, leaked, or will leak. Another bad bit of HD engineering. Also the rockerboxes are a favorite spot for the oil to seep by.

With a minimum of money you can get 75hp/80tq out of the stock80" EVO. Enjoy it!
