I have a 1990 Heritage. The other day the odometer and tripometer stopped working. The speedo still indicates correct speed. If I get to about 70mph the odometer/trip will start to turn but are not accurate.
Any ideas? I don't want to buy and aftermarket speedo cause I'd like to keep the original miles. Could it be a cable issue or is the problem in the speedo?
When you get down to the basic mechanism inside they are very simple. The trip and mileometer mechanism is probably prone to clogging up with dirt after a lot of years. May only need a good clean, failing that follow Dr Hess's recommendation.
I'm not sure about your '90 Heritage but my '95's speedo is a non-reparable unit.
I'm having problems with the lights in mine so I did some research and the manual and the dealership both say you have to replace a malfunctioning speedo.

The dealership can't/won't....but a speedometer shop can repair it. Most speedo's require special tools to dissemble/reassemble it without damage...so most people can't do it even if it just needs cleaning/oiling.

Then why does the '95 manual tell me it is designed as a non-reparable unit?
(No sarcasm intended just asking)
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try and is if I can get in it first. I think the 90 speedo is the same as the 95. I found a speedo repair shop online and when I called they said they couldn't qoute a price without looking at it.

A new one from the local dealer is $167 and change.
