Ok before everyone goes off on me about buying the most expensive parts out there, i know that you have to pay for quality. With that being said, i could use a little input on parts you can buy on Ebay vs Catalogs (J&P, Dennis Kirk etc.)
I have to put a stator in my 96 Heritage Looking on ebay and i can get a 32 amp system for around $140. In the catalog the least expensive is $240 on up. Has anyone tried the systems that are offered on ebay? Or is paying the extra money for possible the same parts from the catalogs the way to go. I would have to think there has to be some credability to the parts they offer on ebay. If anyone has used the "cost effective" part, how has it performed. Thanks for any input. Bully
My system recently blew. I had my Indy do the install and he choose Accel . Next time I will go all factory stuff, but the Accel stuff seems to be working great now for a lot less money. More than 140 bucks, but less than MOCO. I trust this Indy.
If the stator is gone you need a whole system, that being stator, rotor, and regulator. Something burned out the stator.
The magnets do get weak on the rotor, and there is no way to tell what is going on in the sealed regulator.
I've been through 4 regulators, and three stators from the moco on my wife's bike. A '85 FXEF. And they were real expensive.
Go on line to a company called Compufire.com and look at their stuff. I first installed one of their ignition system's on my '73 Ironhead Sportster. It never failed to fire on the second kick in over two years.(kick start only)
Bought the system for wife's bike and it has been reliable for 4yrs. now. Not one HD component lasted more than six(6) months.
Stator went out on my '01 FXDXT October, 2011. Replaced it with one of their systems and have had no electrical problems since.
You're not looking at much more for the complete system then they are asking for a cheaper component that you will have to replace in six or so months, and go through the process of pulling the primary again. Unless of course the stator just burns out the regulator, which you will replace just in time to replace the stator again, and again, and again.........
If the stator is gone you need a whole system, that being stator, rotor, and regulator. Something burned out the stator.
Nonsense!!! The stators go because the insulation falls off the wires where they exit the stator just before they go through the primary.....most aftermarket replacements have superior insulation at this point than the stock parts (which are likely made in China anyway)
You don't need to replace everything but you must ALWAYS check your charging voltage across the battery to make sure the regulator didn't go crook at the same time but its not that common.
If its not an 06 TC the rotor will probably last forever....
Thanks for input guys but what i'm looking for is any info on the systems that you can buy on ebay. If they are good system why not save a hundred bucks. They claim to be build as good as any others. So was just wondering if anybody has tried them and how they performed. And by system i mean stator, rotor and regulator.
Yes, that's why I mentioned Accel. There are a number of vendors who sell complete Accel charging systems on ebay for reasonable prices. If you search Accel Harley charging system or stator, you will find them.
I purchased a kit from ebay around 2 yrs ago cant remember the brand name right now but only give 160 for the complete kit stator, rotor and regulator and has been flawless for 2 yrs. I say go for it.
ive bought so many items for my bike on ebay i cant remember them all. check the sellers feedback. i bought a new set of chrome controls, on/off, start, turn signals, you know the whole setup. it was $85.00, that was 5 years ago. catalog wanted almost $200.00. if my charging system went thats where id buy mine. ebay sellers dont have the overhead. just like a innova code reader i was looking at for a new car i bought, checker $234.00, amazon $125.00. pays to shop around. then again some items on ebay can be bought from the catalog for the same price. have to check prices.
