Default 99 Evo Smoking

I have a 99 Heritage Softail with a 88 Evo motor. I relized that im burning oil from the front part of the motor. Does anybody know what would cause this problem and is it easy to fix. I am mechanicaly inclined but just dont know how to diagnose the problem. Ive been told that its my valve seals and also been told its my piston rings. Dont know but if anybody knows, I would greatly appreciate the help.

You probably need to use the shop manual and do both a compression test, and a leakdown. This would be the best place to start

It is likely to be one or the other of those. Jethro's advise is on the button - if the front cylinder is low on compression test that will suggest rings. However removing heads and cylinders is in your stars for the near future, so you could just dive in. Do both of 'em!

I was kind of busy last night, but have more time this morning. The shop manual for your year engine is a must. It has a great description of doing a compression test and how to quickly look for ring problems, and also how to trouble shoot valve guide issues. I assume you're already checked the plugs and there is probably a difference between front and back with the front one looking oily sooted. Are you getting bluish smoke out the exhaust for the front cylinder? I think the advice someone gave you originally-either rings our valve seals, or both-covers 99% of all the oil burning problems related to evo's.

stock or aftermarket push rods? ive run into people putting "higher flow" push rods on a stock motor that didnt need any extra oil to the top end which resulted in the rockers filling up with oil and draining down threw the valves enough to make it smoke
