Default Throttle Tensioner?

I have been trying different versions of redneck cruise and have not really been too happy with anything I've tried yet. The clip-on paddle style worked pretty well, but broke in a month. The Kuryakyn throttle assist takes up too much space on my grip for my liking.

I like the idea of using some form of a throttle holder for warm up rather than the enrichener while putting my gloves on. I don't really plan on using it much on the road, but occasionally when on open highway.

I have seen the boss under the clamp between the cables as well as the paddle that attaches to the stock thumb wheel, but I seem to be missing the thumb wheel. I don't know if my bike ever had one to begin with. What do I need to add the stock throttle tension holder to my bike? Is it just the thumb wheel or is there some internal piece I need as well? Part numbers would be very handy as I haven't had much luck searching for it.

Thumb wheel, spring, little c-clip, and tensioner shoe should do it. Your dealer should be able to do the job.

I just removed and replaced the engine by myself with helpful advice from here. Do I really need to go to the dealer for this or can I just collect the parts and do it myself?

Not sure if it is the same but the part numbers in my book are 56397-74c and 56396-74a.

Those are for a 95-96 model but I bet they are the same for the 90.
If not your dealer should be able to cross reference them for you.

Collect the parts and do it yourself. I use mine for just that reason, to warm up the bike without the enrichener. Only time I use the enrichener is when the motor is cold, and then only to start.

It used to be a stock fitment in the distant past, then the great safety neurosis kicked in and we have to have twin cable throttles that shut themselves, so the friction wheel was left off new bikes. In the best Harley tradition it was made available as an accessory, which is how I bought mine! It may still be available, so yes, try your local dealer.

I meant buy the parts at the dealer. When you put everything bac together be very, very , careful that you don't pinch any wires and the grip is on far enough so the brake light doesn't stay on.
