I had a friend rebuild my 84 evo but i think they used the flywheels and pinion shaft assembly from a later model, i bought the pinion gear for a L77-89 BUT its very loose on the shaft i miked thepinion shaft and it aprox .632 inch can anyone tell me hat year parts i need to buy?
Is the shaft area where the pinion gear sits straight or have slight taper to it ? After 1990 they changed the pinion shaft from tapered to straight which is slightly smaller . There's a kit that corrects that check with a few of the bigger catalog suppliers .
You have to have this conversion kit can't just use a later gear , size difference and mixing will eat the gear train .

That's the one but you need to make sure which gear color code your motor needs , there's 4 of them red , blue , yellow & black . It's a matched set kinda deal each is just enough different in size it will either whine like crazy or bind and chew the gear sets .
Your cam gear should have a color spot on it so match up , if not Red is the most common and black after that . J&P cycles list's them .
Your going to need to hit the dealer or a local builder and ask . From here on it takes somebody who knows or has the specs on the actual sizes per color between the years and give you the match up . I can't say reliably without doing the measuring and math and won't give info I'm not 100% on , sorry man .
