I had a 1986 FXRD, liked the bike but had oil leaks. Replaced gaskets 3 times finally just sold it. My 99 Heritage EVO was trouble free. Sold it & got a new 07 Heritage. This bike would blow neck grease back on the tank and front head. Dealer could not get it to stop. Sold it and am now looking for another EVO.
They made improvements every year, (though some of their "improvements" sucked) and all remans are brought up to 99 specs....so Harley believes 99 is the best...never had any problems out of my 84.
Overall I agree but weren't these the first years with EFI?
Personally I think any used one owner only bike is a good evo as long as you treat it well. I like the dashes more on the newer flh, mine of course has the oval speedo tach look.
My 1990 Evo only had leaks on one set of gaskets, didn't leak after that. In fact the various things that gave problems were all fixed by replacements. I think you were unlucky with your 86. If you are looking at touring models, any after 92.
