Default Timing Question

I have a general idea of what timing adjustments do, however Im curious why one would want to adjust their timing. Iv always marked where it was when I had to go into the came case and never thought much about it. I have ported heads, bored cylinders, new pistons and a I just put a new cam in yesterday. any reason why I would want to adjust? Anyone want to give my a fairly educated explaination of timing with regards to our Evo motor.

Just trying to learn something new here. Thanks

Lt.

If you changed the cam the cut out to locate the timing ignitor cup may be slightly off due to manufacturing tolerances and this is why you will need to re-time your bike....also, if buying a used bike its a good idea to check in case the PO had pulled it apart and put it back together wrong.

When I did my cam brg., I marked the sensor position. After everything was back together, I checked the timing while running, and it was right on. I would still check it whenever I had it apart, just to make sure it was right. It is a little messy without the timing plug, but I get the job done. I do not however check the timing at regular intervals, as it really should not change after being set. I do check to make sure the VOES is working everyonce in a while.

Simple answer is efficiency and safety, I tried my best to explain what is going on at the end of the attached thread, educated people will not come off their secrets of timing adjustments, they make a living with timing experiance.

Default Very good Info

Glad I found this site. A lot of good info. Been riding old iron for a lot of years & new to the world of Evo's. By the way, got Donnie's book on Evo's. He even signed it. Also have the other book's that were mentioned. Very informative. Keep it up. I will have question's in the near future. Ride safe,
Harold
