What engine does this have?
An excellent find indeed!
I often scan the local classifieds and I have never come across anything similar with such low mileage.
I really like my '88 but I would love to add a mint '97 or '98 to my garage. I would buy that in a heart beat if the price was reasonable.
How much is the owner asking for it? (In U.S. dollars please.)
Best of luck with the purchase. I would have somebody buy it for you immediately if possible. It would be unfortunate if it got sold to another lucky person before you returned.
Please keep us updated and post some pictures as soon as possible.

A full service includes changing all fluids. Tyres are a must if they are original. Make sure the brakes function and the pads haven't hung up or pistons stuck. A weekend of servicing and gentle tinkering and checking will ensure it is ship shape.
@ MarkJetski - price is about $13,400, but that gives a false impression as the South African Rand is a bit overinflated right now - realistically more like about $9,000.
I am quite sure that I will have to put on a new set of tyres.
In SA the AA are not known for being competent to do bike appraisals, and very few of the "indy" dealerships have a long history with HD. The only one that does was the "unofficial" HD agent in my home town during the apartheid years - they were forced to take their MoCo signage down when apartheid was over, and HD came to town. I tried getting them to give advice fitting a klicktronic to another bike (they are the "licenced" agents) and they could not have been more unhelpful if they had told me to foxtrot oscar.
The national vehicle registration authorities are likewise unable or uninterested in verifying odometer readings on a private sale (or any other for that matter)
So, I will be taking the bike to HD Tyger Valley for it's check-up. Mainly I want to have some kind of verification that the odometer hasn't been fiddled with, and to have a compression test and some comfort that this bike is what it appears to be. I have a personal connection with the guy who holds the franchise, and though he will definitely not undercharge me, I don't think he will try to sell me something I don't need. He knows that I am a bit of a shade tree mechanic.
You wanted a pic - well here it is: complete with the previous owner (before he got big)
Thanks to you all for your input.
Cheers,
Peggers

Hope he realises he's a lucky boy, Sparra! 53 old and I am just getting my first HD.
Nice find. $9,000 USD is about full retail boat for that bike. Still I think that I would pay it if I couldn't negotiate him down. You may want to call HD in Milwaukee, WI with the vin number, and see what they can tell you. There was one recall on that model. It involved replacing the ignition switch. Google it, and you will find the campaign. I doubt if the MoCo will cover it today, but I would replace it if I were you. As others have said, tires, three hole oil change, give the brake a once over, tighten the spokes if she has em. I would baby it the first 100km or so just to make sure that all parts are relubricated.

SA sounds like a tough place to do business, yet here in NZ the SA immigrants are really good people to do business with....
