Default 1992 FLHS new owner here!

Hello y'all. I'm not new on the forum but am a new owner of 1992 FLHS. Bartered my 2003 XL1200 Custom with this bike. I figured why not. At least I'm still riding a Sport Harley-Davidson (FLHS = Electra Glide Sport).

Of course this thread is worthless without picture(s), so hopefully by weekend I will post some pics.

In the mean time, I'd like to find out how can I mount Shovelhead fairing to the bike. I did PMed couple of forum members that did this and am still waiting for the replies. But if anyone else do have some info or "how to" about this, please do share.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

This morning I try to fit in a later Shovelhead fairing (come with original mounting bracket) and right off the bat I know is not gonna fit. So most likely I have to use the stock windshield bracket then and just "customized" the "L" bracket to hold the fairing? Do I have to cut the windshield, if going this route, so it give me clearance on the bread box instrument panel?

Cool

Hi hog indo, I was about to reply to your recent message! I went round the same loop with my early 80s batwing. The stock shovel mountings won't bolt straight on because our FLHS headlamp housing is bigger. Harley did sell a bolt-on kit for the FLHS for a while, but it was very expensive, so I didn't buy one.

My brother is a bit of an ace with metal, so he made up a set of brackets for me. They are very similar to the stock ones, but alter the location of the batwing so it fits snug round the headlamp. My windshield mounts to the main mountings, not the batwing itself.

So you have two choices. Use the stock mountings you have, but modify them or make up new L brackets to shift the batwing to where it will fit, or make new brackets from scratch. Unfortunately my bike is in bits at present and I can't find my brackets to take photos of them. Just too much stuff around at present!

These views show mine at closer quarters, from the cockpit and from the front. Hope that helps. It is certainly worth the effort of making it fit, I did mine about 12 years ago now.

Thanks Grbrown! I was just thinking about fabbing my own bracket. So we'll see what I can come up with.

So if you added on new brackets, then you have three "plates" that's being attached to the forks? Fairing bracket, windshield bracket and passing lamp bracket?

No, just two. The windshield is mounted at the top of the fairing brackets via the horizontal chrome strip you can see in my first photo. You should have a hole at the top of each of your batwing brackets, facing forwards. That is where that chrome strip is mounted.

Fortunately when I bought my batwing it came with an old windshield as well, including the chrome strip (there are actually two strips, one each side of the shield). In that photo you can see five screws through the chrome strip. The centre and end ones clamp the shield and chrome together, the other two hold the shield to the top of the fairing brackets.

If you look at my sigpic you can see the chrome passing lamp bracket. IIRC there are spacers inside that on the mounting bolts. The batwing brackets go inside the passing lamp brackets and I think I have thinner spacers now. It is a long time ago that I did all this, so memory is a bit hazy!

Thanks Graham. I am now have two options in mind as to how I mount the fairing. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will start to work on this.
