I think what the OP wanted to know was how much it was worth to add it to the bike. Just something extra he was getting with it. Not that he was going to change it. That way he could figure it into the price the seller wanted.

This bike is basically being held for me with money that I could very well lose. The cam was installed back in the mid nineties by an indy (still in business). They could not pull up any of the work order from their archives, but the same owner of the indy, from back then, said it would have been the ev27 on an evo. I went to HD and talked with one of the techs that I've known for years. The conversation kind of scared me away from the bike, him saying he'd be very, very apprehensive of the situation. So here I am procrastinating every day and thinking about the bike. It test drove out pretty nice, started right up, with the only issue being a shifter adjustment I believe. I only rode it about 5 miles as I had to beat a thunderstorm back to his house. It's a 95 Heritage Special, pristine condition with just over 10k on the clock. $8,000. Should I pull the trigger? Detach windshield, oversize saddlebags, stage 1.

I have a 95 Softail with the EV27 cam. I installed it myself, so the price was negligible. I would want to know if they also changed the inner cam bearing, but it looks as if that info won't be available to you. Nontheless, you might ask the indy if they were doing that on a routine basis when changing cams. I had the original cam in, so I have experienced the change in performance, and it is pretty dramatic. I am extremely happy with this cam, and made the change after reviewing a lot of threads here. One of the great things about this cam is that the upper valve train/pushrod geometry is still withing stock constraints, so no other changes or concerns are present.
It is difficult to comment on the price. Exactly what extras or condition, etc. Do you have a picture, and may I have missed it, but exactly what model is it?

$8K sounds a little high to me. Last Saturday I stopped to look at a real clean 99 hat was parked on the BLVD. The sign on the windshield read 1999 Heritage Special, 14K miles, 1-Owner, All Service Records, $7000 OBO. I wasn't out there Sunday so I think it sold.

Jethro, I could probably call one more time to the indy, see what he says. Could you elaborate a little more an the cam bearing being, not being replaced? What would my concerns be if it wasn't, other than maybe a performance issue. Like I said, I didn't get to ride it as much as I would have liked, and I don't think I was much above 45mph. Although it ran very smooth, I wasn't overly impressed. But then again, I'm comparing to the later model twinkies that I've owned. I would be paying $8k and probably then pay HD to go over it when I get it home ($$$?). I'm a bonehead mechanically, oil change is all I've ever done on my own. Front tire is original, back fairly new. 1995 softail special, 10,900 miles. Pristine condition. I thought this was a good price?

You're going to need a new front tire as well. You don't want to be cruising around on 17 year old rubber.

If the cam bearing fails, and you don't catch it failing quick enough, it can do a lot of damage to your engine.

I'm bouncing in a van in l.a., so this text may suck. Normally, most mechanics/owners replace the inner cam bearing at the same time a the cam. The evo engine is extremely reliable. It does have a few weak points, the above mentioned bearing is one of them, but the bike has so few miles that even the stock bearing is probably fine. Price does seem a little high to me. A 95 carbureted evo is a great year for reliability. Not sure what type of riding you like to do.

OK, this will be my third HD. My first was carb, the Deluxe was efi. The 06 Deluxe was my dream bike, but I was forced to sell about a year and a half ago. Since I prefer carb, love the style of the Deluxe, and my budget is a little tight, the heritage special seemed like a good choice right now. I've read on here about the indestructible evo, and I like that too. I'm about a 7,500 mile per year rider up here in Ohio. I would be doing some medium to long range trips both solo and with my wife. I see a lot of these bikes in the 9-$11,000 price range. The original owner is in poor health and has little recall on the maintenance history, but it is in showroom condition. I'm just apprehensive about dumping another grand or so into it to have it gone over, misc unknowns, and a new front tire. Maybe I should negotiate closer to the 7- $7,500 mark instead of $8k? Asking price was $9,500.
