1986 FLHTC with 60k on it now that I made the trip with my daughter and I from southern Michigan to the UP and back with no problems!!!! I was a little nervous as this is a new bike to me and had many issues that I fixed prior to going (the %U&*(#E$@ head that traded me was not honest). At any rate I got back and two of my heat shields were rattling pretty good and loose so I removed them only to find that the tabs were pretty much broke off that hold them on. Any fix to this as the chrome is very good condition but the tabs or loops are not? Do not want to spend money to buy new if there is a proven home remedy. Just don't want to rig stuff like the idiot before me did!
Well, you could try tacking it back together with a hit from the MIG welder with some stainless wire, but other than that, you pretty much need new.
The heat shields from a FLHT up to 2008 will fit, so you might be able to find some take offs cheap. Also be sure to inspect the crossover pipe for cracks. It is unobtainium now, so it it is cracked, just replace the whole exhaust with one from a twinky up to 2008.
Wow, I did not know that all the way up to an 08 would fit! That is great news. I would really like to pick up some true duals but I cannot post a want add for a bit on here yet so I will be patiently waiting. Love the site. I am new to the older evo's so this has been a big help with all the issues I had to resolve from the nice "honest" fella I got it from. Thats enough whining on my part now though. I did end up bending the tabs over a bit to make them shorter and that is working for now but it wont be for long. Thanks for the help.
No problem. I bought my bike new, so I know "a bit" about the 86 FLHT. Uh, buy a spare "clutch finger" and throw it in the tour pack. Almost all of us have replaced at least one.
