You should have no problem finding a clean evo for your enjoyment. There are plenty on the road. There is bias anywhere. There are old evo lovers here with baggers running over 100k miles without rebuild. Research is the key. I would stay away from the efi stick with a carb because now days the dealers won't hardly touch an evo. Cylinder base gasket leaks and rocker cover leaks are really the only thorns imho. Just give it a good looking over and make sure it rides straight.
I've had the bug bad since my buddy insisted I ride his new 2012 superglide. I can't afford a new bike but from what I'm learning, the EVO models offer good bang for the buck as well as being reliable. School me on what to look for and look out for. I'm partial to softails and belt drive too. I've found plenty of seemingly good deals, but I don't know what I'm looking at. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Tony
Screw the Softail, and get a FXR. Best handling Harley out there, and the engine is rubber mounted…smooth.

I've never had an issue with my '93 FXR's wiring. Rock solid bike, bulletproof engine, smooth as hell, and can carve turns better than any other Harley.

I was not talking about FXR models. They are in a Class by themself. The OP was asking about Softails. Softails can't touch any FXR.

Well, if it means anything, I used to own a '85 FXST also. Probably the coolest looking Harley I've ever owned. Didn't handle very well, and it vibrated pretty awful, but I never had a single problem with her. Dependable as hell, never leaked a drop of oil, never any electrical issues, and she looked pretty righteous.

Or could it be that it was just different from what you were use to so it was harder for you to work on? I've put a good amount of time into looking over the wiring on my '93 and I can't find any reason having to do with wiring that I would avoid it. Actually I'm pretty happy with it.
All good stuff. As far as soft tails go, I like the look. That's about it. I understand the rubber mounts don't shake much, solid mounts do, I'm OK with both. I'm sure both have their devoted following. I'm into Mopar and that's just how it is in that hobby too. Me, I like what I like, all of it. Right now, I just want a Harley and want to educate myself. Sounds like the EVOs were great motors. I've found an 87 FXR and a 88 softail, both with around 20K mi, both with new tires and 20K servicing,both within driving distance, both upriced under $5500. Now I just need to find a new home for my 64 Dodge (maxwedge) project to finance it. I do appreciate all the good advice, there's always two sides.
