I have a 1997 FLSTS. Unfortunately I haven't riden it much this past summer. (Also have a 2011 FLHX) Anyway, finally decided to get her out and ride and evidently she is pissed at me and the front cylinder stopped firing. I've swapped coils and nothing changed. At an idle only the rear fires. At a higher RPM, the front kicks in but it still runs rough. I'm at a loss. Anyone have any ideas?
Ok if it's a stock ignition, the check the plug, then the wire (switch wires from front to rear) if the miss changes cylinders then the wires are bad. If it stays with the front one then check the compression/leak down.
John
Guess I should have said this earlier, but new plugs, new wires and tried a new coil. I've even tried switching plugs front to back and swapping ports on the coil and I get the same thing.
I have not done a leak down test yet. I'm inclined to think its something electrical because I had the dash off when I cleaned it and before securing it back down I plugged everything up and just set it in place on top of the tank and everything seemed to run ok. But I don't have a clue what/where to look IF a loose wire is the problem.
Thought I would try here and see if someone else has ever had a similar problem. I'll try the leak down test next.
i had an identical issue with my flhrci. swapped coils, plugs, wires, a borrowed brain, injectors and a few sensors (stopped @ TPS). eventually gave up and converted it to carb / dyna2000 ignition. no issues since.
Ie it stock ighition, if so it's not the ignition as both plugs fire at the same time. Could be a bad injector if compression is OK, or maybe the tuner is failing. Try removing the tuner and see if it runs on two cylinders.
Is it EFI or carb.?
If EFI could be anything and should show a trouble code .
If carb. and you have done all listed , look for a hanging valve after the bike being stored for a long period.
A quick compression test should show this.
Its been awhile since I've been on, but I thought I would let you all know it was none of the above... Turns out that when you let a bike sit for a bit with 1/2 a tank of fuel and then try riding it after said bike sat for an extended period of time that the gas doesn't like to burn well. Damn... who would have thought that (note the hint of sarcasm here). Bottom line... I'm a dumbass. Thanks for everyones imput though. I appreciate it.
