5th gear seal installation, 1990 FXRS

It would be best if you just leave the 5th gear in place because taking it out renders the main output bearing unserviceable so if you press the needles in and out without putting any pressing force on the output bearing (this is the one the 5th gear goes through) it will save you time and dollars....Ok to leave 5th gear in if it looks OK and not replace it.

I use a threaded bar, some washers and a socket to press the needle bearings.

Thanks Spanner. About ready to pull our gear and main shafts. I suspect just re-positioning the needle bearing is a short term fix, as it will slip again. Is it best to loctite a new bearing in place?

I like your threaded bar solution - used it to replace inner primary bearing.
