Default Could use new starter recommendations

finally got the starter out of wife's '89 Softail. When I turn the splined shaft by hand, it sounds pretty bad. I think I'll just go with a new starter. Can anyone recommend a good one. I looked at a few on the internet. Anyone using the Spyke brand starter on their bikes. Also, does anyone know the price of one from the dealer?? The bike has a stock engine. Thanks. KC

Depends on your skill level .
If your ok to rebuild the starter yourself ., the parts are easily accessable .

Ultima, good starters reasonable price. I take it your wifes bike isn't a stage three, so you don't need a super starter.

I've never been a fan of "Super Starters" personally.....They come with more windings sure, but the gear reduction drives are all the same weak design from OEM to aftermarket, and the stronger motor just tears those components up faster.

This past summer I purchased a starter for my 86. I didn't want to mess with an aftermarket one and try saving a few bucks so I went with one from the local Harley shop. I think I paid a good $250.00 or so (don't remember exactly). I have had some starter and solenoid issues in the past and figured I would spend a few extra bucks.

All ***** has a lifetime warranty and I've got one on one of my bikes. Unfortunately, the warranty only covers the part itself, not the labor. Haven't had any troubles with it but, just wanted to point out that if it does crap the bed, getting the replacement installed (if needed) would be on my dime or my time.

Just out of curiosity why would you expect All ***** to warranty anything but their part?

I put in an All ***** starter in when I was chasing the dreaded click on my bike (I hadn't heard of HDForums at that time). It has been over a year and still going strong.
