So this past Sunday, my wife and I left our house at 3:30 AM on the Ultra and heading to Disneyland so my wife can join runDisney (Disney's half marathon event. Starts at 5 AM). Forty minutes later when we exiting the freeway, I noticed smokes coming out from the right exhaust (front engine).
Soon after I parked the bike and off I went to become my wife best supporter. Proudly she finished and made it to the finish line along 2000+ other runners. Around 10 AM we're back on the bike and get ready to go home. We hit a red light at the last traffic light before entering the freeway and more smokes coming out the right exhaust.
We were going 70 mph on freeway when I noticed the engine doing some "coughing" and it seemed like the engine ready to die. So I hold on the clutch and rev the engine trying to bring it back to live, while at the same time did my best to maneuver and switch lanes from the left all the way to the right. The rev-ing helped a bit although about 70 seconds later it happened again. So I did the clutch & rev again and this time I also exited the freeway at the same time.
The bike never die on us and we ended up taking same residential roads going back home. Safely. So here what I noticed:
- the smokes come out when the bike is on idle (stopping at traffic light)
- BAD gas mileage! I filled up the bike the night before. When we got back home, the fuel pointer stays between red and white!! Per the odometer, our trip home-Disneyland-home is only 105 miles.
- When we took the residential roads after the highway "incidents", I think the density of the smokes was less. But then again it could be because the more brighter with the sun all the way out.
Sounds like the carb is dumping fuel into the engine, which can be caused by a needle not sealing on the seat.
Drop the float bowl and give the needle and seat a shot of carb cleaner, you probably have a bit of debris in there keeping the needle and seat from sealing.
Start with something simple...pull the plugs...that will tell you if the smoke is fuel or oil...the dying could just be fouled plugs...but you will have to correct what is fouling them.
