Default Hi Guys

I am looking at a couple of bikes and want to pick the brains of some real bikers. I have ridden for the last 6 years, started on an 06 sporty 883, hubby taught me to ride and in the first 4 months put 800 miles on bike. In the next 7 months, put 10,000 on my little sporty. Then I bought an 07 road king and road it until last November, put a total of 65,000 miles on it. I am looking at getting an older bike that I can pay cash for and not worry. I ride to work, I ride to play, I ride in a group and I ride alone. I have heard differing reports on the Evo engine and just want you to fill me in. I have about decided on a beautiful 1991 FLTCU Tour Glide Ultra Classic with 42422 miles. I am not a small woman and want a big touring bike with all the "luggage" as my son calls it. Now I ask for your help, what do I need to know about this bike and this engine.

Beautiful bike! Although, 91-92 there were things changing, so others with more knowledge can offer more. But I love my 88!

While I don't know if I'm a real biker I do know that you should ask the PO what was done to the engine (or any other part of the bike), get any maintence records they have, and take it for a test ride.

Welcome willaib,
The evo is a very reliable engine and can run problem free for many, many miles.
Most owners will change the lifters at around 40000 as preventive maintenance there have been problems lifters but most due this with a cam change as an upgrade.
There was a soft recall for the castings in and around 90 but if they haven't been a problem hey they shouldnt be.
Other then that I can't think of anything they are simple bikes that are a pleasure to ride I use my 85 as a daily computer 125 miles per day with no concern or problems to speak of other then takin the long way and always being late lol.
The beauty of the evo is its simplicity with a manual and a few tools you would be surprised what you can do yourself.
I have owned several bikes and will no doubt buy more (it's an adiction) but I wii always have my evo.
Cheers

I have owned a 1991 FLTC for 20 years. It has 73,000 miles with no problems, great bike. About 40,000 miles is time for lifters to be changed just to be safe.

I forgot, pre fuel injection. That is a plus too, CV carb is easy to work on.

Welcome to HDF from the UK. You will also get plenty of help from in here. Some of us have owned these bikes from new, or a very long time, so we have plenty of experience with them. There is no reason not to buy that 91.

Thanks everyone. I go test ride it on Sat. I was also told to see if it smoked on startup and then cleared which would point to a ring job. I check in nightly so any other info would be deeply appreciated. i am trying to be logical but I really really like this bike, and unless it is crap when I ride it, I will be joining the ranks of the EVO owners

You're in the wrong place for that.
