Thanks everyone. I go test ride it on Sat. I was also told to see if it smoked on startup and then cleared which would point to a ring job. I check in nightly so any other info would be deeply appreciated. i am trying to be logical but I really really like this bike, and unless it is crap when I ride it, I will be joining the ranks of the EVO owners
When I got mine it was just after a Harley re-man on the motor.
She smoked a little on start up then went away. She no longer does that.
I guess that was a break in period.
If you really really like the bike then anything can be fixed.
By the way welcome to the nut house...
Please post pics of your new bike when you get them.
As said above, Evo's are great motors. The one you are looking at has the good cam bearing in it, so all it should need is a set of lifters which is no big deal. Check for oil leaks around the cylinder base gaskets as that is a weak spot on EVO's, however I have 38,000 on my 99 with no leaks. Just warm it up a bit before riding it hard. Good luck.
Welcome aboard, As previously stated see if you can find out what is anything was done to the bike by the PO's. Then just take care of it and it will take care of you. Routine maintenance will keep the major problems to a minimum!! Hope this helps. Also put in where you are from on your profile and then if someone is near and you need some extra help, most of the people on here will work for food!!LOL!!!

I am looking at a couple of bikes and want to pick the brains of some real bikers. I have ridden for the last 6 years, started on an 06 sporty 883, hubby taught me to ride and in the first 4 months put 800 miles on bike. In the next 7 months, put 10,000 on my little sporty. Then I bought an 07 road king and road it until last November, put a total of 65,000 miles on it. I am looking at getting an older bike that I can pay cash for and not worry. I ride to work, I ride to play, I ride in a group and I ride alone. I have heard differing reports on the Evo engine and just want you to fill me in. I have about decided on a beautiful 1991 FLTCU Tour Glide Ultra Classic with 42422 miles. I am not a small woman and want a big touring bike with all the "luggage" as my son calls it. Now I ask for your help, what do I need to know about this bike and this engine.
What you need to know is if the excellent Harley EVO motor in your possible purchase of a 22 year old bike has been thrashed by a previous owner or not.?
If you are unsure about the many technical checks and varied noises that might indicate a possible problem , i would advise that you have a reputable Harley mechanic check it out for you . The money spent for this check is money well spent and you will receive a report that you can use to decide .
Note 2 points here ...
1) If the p.o. dosent agree with this , RUN !
2) Have it checked by a HARLEY mechanic only.
Please let us know how you made out .

Agree with all of the previous posts but would like to add a little information about a "Harley" mechanic. I have a HD dealership about 5 miles from my house. Wonderful people, parts people are experienced and do the diggin required to get the right parts for EVO's. The service guys are polite and professional, but are up front and honest that they don't have a lot of experience with EVO's, none of them have much time wrenching them so beyond regular service and tires they are a little nervous. The dealership about 45 miles away has three service mechanics that all ride EVO's and know what they are doing, so I talk to them when I have questions. There are also good independent mechanics who love EVO's. Hell, I have two or three friends that I think are more comfortable than some of the mechanics at certain dealerships. And finally, this site is an invaluable resource, the guys on here can tackle anything, although sometimes you have to pick your poison because it seems there are 3 or 4 ways to fix issues!!!!!
Everyone has pretty much nailed it. I do agree with Bleachy though, find a guy that's been wrenching on Harleys'for 30 years. Doesn't matter if his uniform is the official black and orange. I'll add that outside the problems that could happen, they are also very simple engines to jump up with very little cost. A new Andrews EV27 cam and a Dyna 2000 ignition module and a stage 1 or stage 2 breather and you're done unless you want to go crazy. Do the cam and the cam bearing gets replaced automatically which is the culprit of many problems in this motor. Evo's are indestructible. Unless the previous owner has completely neglected normal service, there is very little that can be wrong. Cylinder base gasket leaks will be a big bill but after that, all the gaskets will be new and you're back on the road with a reborn evo! Good luck with the grocery getter, I hope it works out for you!
You guys rock. I bought it and I love it. I rode it home last Sat in 30 degree weather with snow. She is going to my "harley" mechanic tomorrow for a shake rattle and roll inspection. This guy has working on my harleys for years and has wrenched on harleys for almost 40 years. He loves to gouge me cause I spend more time riding than cleaning, but regular services are done at 3000 mile intervals so he has to have something to gouge me on. I will post pictures as soon as the weather lets up. I hope we have a break in the rain tomorrow, really don't want to break out the rain gear, but hey, I will.
