i have been looking on ebay for a new one. where else do you recommend getting one from?

Go to harley.
If not that then call 512-441-2427.
That is antler creek cycle leather but he deals in parts too.

oh and another thing i noticed. at about 20 mph the speedo shows 70. where does the speedo get its signal from and how is it adjusted?

Isn't that a mechanical speedo? Mine used to be ok, now it's 10 off, which means the odo isn't registering properly either.

Here is the fun!!!!!!!!!!
Harley uses 3 different ratios for their speedometers.
1 to 1, 2 to 1, and 2240 to 60.

On your front axle you will find the speedo drive gear.
It has to match your speedometer.

It could be a bad speedo cable.

greasemonkey, your speedo should be the 2240:60...same as my 84 if the front end is stock as well as your speedo set up.

thr front end from what i can tell is not stock. how can i verify what i have?
