I purchased a 1999 HD Heritage Softail Classic about a year & 1/2 ago from a "friend." It had a clear title & I registered & titled in my name. I decided to sell the bike & discovered there was no vin on the frame. The bike had been modified with a S & S Super Stock engine & other extra's. I talked to the person who sold it to me & he told me that the frame was a after market light weight frame, & had no vin number on the frame. So I ran the vin number on the title & it's for a 1998 MG.The title reads Harley 1999 mc. My question is should the S&S engine have a vin number & on it & where would it be located? I found out that in the state of Ms the police can conficate any bike without a vin as contraband. Can anyone please advise me on how to correct this PLEASE?
I don't know how you got it registered. The DMV in FL checked the VIN when I titled it. I don't know what to tell you. Maybe someone else knows about this stuff. Sorry to hear about it though, sounds like a lousy situation. Best of luck.
In California, the Highway Patrol( police) department will put a vin # on any bike you build special construction if it has an aftermarket frame, after they inspect it. The S&S motor has a serial # they will need both #s to register it Ask your DMV.
Ask the guy who sold you the bike to see if he's got an MSO for the frame, cause in order to register the bike with an aftermarket frame at the DMV you have to show the MSO for the frame.

Here the only check the vin at the DMV if you request them to. I know hind site is 20/20......but I feel very stupid now! I think if I can find the vin on the engine I can get the title fixed. I sure hate to have to press charges against my so called friend.

I talked to him & he gave me some BS about he never had any trouble with title, tag, or insurance on the bike. But at this point I don't beleive a word he says. He also told me any problems with the bike's title I'd have to take it up with the guy it got it from 10 years ago. I know better than that! Do you know if the engine has a vin on it? And thanks for the reply.
You need to call the local DMV Inspector and ask them this question as laws will be different from state to state. He or she will know the answer. My guess is that they will want to come look at it and since it's a total custom build it will probably get a VIN assigned and a totally new title. They may have a problem with the current title depending on how it came to exist. I suppose it's possible that a custom build could end up with the same VIN as an MG just by dumb luck but, the DMV Inspector will know what you need to do to fix this in your state. There are regulations for custom built vehicles and you have to get a VIN stamped onto the frame it's self.
I feel like they will want to know how the heck it came with a title that calls it a Harley Davidson when it wasn't manufactured by HD. They will also want to confirm that it's not a relabeled stolen bike. I'm sure with an aftermarket frame and engine you'll be fine on that. It's the title that says HD that they will question. The guy that sold it to you will probably be answering some questions.
An after market frame with an S&S engine, how can they even call it a Harley?
I don't beleive it's a after market frame. The frames has just been modified. I think he's full of crap & he just thinks I'm stupid because I'm a women. I guess I'm just gonna take the title to the DMV Monday, & let the chips fall where they may. I tried to tell him just buy the bike back, but of course he has no $$. I hate to get anyone in trouble but I'm backed into a corner now. I really appreciate all the in put. Thanks
