i only read the first page of this thread.

What i would do, if the frame has no vin and the engine has no vin.
then how can the bike be traced? dont even present the title, just go to the dmv and register it as a home made that YOU just completed, and they will inspect, check for theft and give you a title . simple!

You typically need receipts for the individual components, or thieves would be building " home builts" every day. Not so simple.

The guy I bought the bike from had owned it for 10 years. I talked to him again & he has to many stories about the vin not being on the frame. He has no paperwork on the modify. At this point I'm scared to call the DMV and tell them anything. The bike runs so good & rides great. But at this point the only thing I know to do is part the bike out. Makes me sick...sick...sick but there's no way I can get the title straightened out. I'm just screwed. I can't take the chance of the bike being conficated, & then I really won't recoop any money. The 2 men that went with me feel really bad, but I'm the one out the money. I hate it when people take advantage of my good nature, & make me step out of my character! But at the end of the day it's all me! Man what a lesson to learn! Thanks everyone for all the info.
Read the first 2 sentences in this post. Softtail Classic 1200cc EVO? 1200cc EVO denotes a sporty motor. If it is in fact a 1200cc motor it's a early Shovel and if S&S makes a 1200cc shovel I've never seen one. S&S shovels are either 80 cu inch or 93 cubes. Either way this a junkyard dog of a bike. Good Luck.

it is that simple really. do you think you need to go to the dmv with a shoe box of reciepts? when you register any other bike you dont need to do that. just the numbers for the frame and motor. if the bike is home made and you have no numbers, the dmv will do a data search for a stolen bike, like the bike you are registering and if they come up empty you all set.

Well yeah sometimes actually. I've built 3 home mades (in Ohio though, we owned a shop up there way back,) and the State Highway Patrol kept the bikes for over an hour while I cooled my heels in their reception area as they rummaged through my receipts before granting me a VIN number.

Here's Mississippi's requirements:

http://www.dor.ms.gov/docs/title_78017.pdf

Please note the "proper bills of sale or other such evidence as deemed necessary" part if the owner doesn't have a title matching the vehicle description / VIN. ( Sherrieberries VIN actually belongs to a 1998 MG!)

I wish her luck...

Maybe where you live. In MN a special construction bike needs receipts along with the engine number. It's not a simple thing to do. Registration of other bikes with numbers is made on the assumption it was manufactured that way.

You might want to just keep the bike. Either that or threaten the guy you bought it from with police and court action. It sounds like he misrepresented the sale on a possibly illegal bike.
