get a CV and manifold. Sure, S&S is great, but a CV is cheaper and does at least as good a job, with better mileage too. There are lots of used CVs available.
I appreciate the input. If I had any doubts they are gone now. Y'all have convinced me.
In your opinion what would be the best aftermarket to replace it with and where is the best place to find one? Money is tight.
Thanks!
look on C liST motercycle then type in Harley & start reading ,not sure what part of texas your in but any of the major citys have a good selction of parts ie Cv carbs & manafolds ,Ifound a good deal on one from a 05 from colorado & emailed the guy & made a good deal with shipping he olny charged me $75 for the carb & $25 for manafold & $10 for shipping it all down here I'am just south of Houston
Depends what kind of riding you do.
I have an S&S on my decker (mostly highway riding), and HSR42 on my Heritage (mostly bar hopping), both suit those purposes very well. CV would be a compromise between these two. Another thing to consider, HSR is not easy to tune, S&S is very easy to tune. CV is again a compromise here.
Agreed....I have owned all three on various rides...just really like the quick and snappy throttle response that the HSR-42 delivers..I have always (once tuned) got around 40 plus MPG, even a heavily modified machine.

Thanks Cowboy! I am about 90 miles southwest of Houston. I will check out Craigslist and see what I can find.

I also like the Mikuni for it's easy starting (in mild weather) and good throttle response. I get about 40-45 MPG with mine, but the CV carb used to get 50+ MPG all the time.
I don't really consider 40 MPG to be very good on a motorcycle in this day and age. I can get almost that good with my car.
My only other issue with the Mikuni is it's touchy to cold start in cold weather (down in the 30's). It will start, but the enrichener doesn't seem strong enough to keep the bike running until it warms up.
