Default turn signals

Morning all, I have a quick question on the turn signals on my new to me 85 FLTC. I have to keep the button pushed in be it left or right for turn signals. Is it normal to have to keep your thumb on the button for them to operate or has someone modified it?

When Harleys first had indicators that was exactly how we had to operate them. I am not sure when they were changed, but my 1990 Glide came with a flasher unit that only required the button to be pushed briefly to set them going. The module that does that is expensive and can fail, so it is possible that has happened on your bike. We need an '85 member to call by and give us a clear steer on that, as my manual only covers bikes back to 87.

My '88 is like that. This topic has been covered extensively here. Try these:

I'm pretty sure the 85 was "push and hold down." 86 had push-on, push-off; that is, you push once to turn the turn signals on and push again to turn them off. In 87, they were back to "push and hold down." Later, the control module (which people have a lot of trouble with) came out that would sense RPM, speed, etc., and then turn the signals off at the wrong time based on that.

I would LOVE to have push-on, push-off. I've heard these badlands modules can be wired to do that, something about cutting a green wire that goes to the speedo. My jap bikes were like that.

Despite Badlands website, my 1990 bike came with the Harley module that Dr Hess mentioned. Mine failed and I bought a replacement, which still works. The greatest frustration is indeed that it can turn off unexpectedly, the cure being to disconnect the white/green wire to the speedo. It is obligingly a single wire with a double-insulated connector, so it doesn't have to be cut and both ends can be left lying around in total safety. Mine's been doing that for over twenty years! Press on, press off, press both buttons for hazards.

HD replacement, or badlands? What do you mean by "despite Badlands website?"

I still have a stock Harley one, I didn't know about Badlands at the time. They state the module I have was only used from 91, but my 90 bike, delivered this time of the year, had one.

My 84 - 90 manual says the modual was introduced in 1989 .
I quess this means you will have to hold the button in for the lamps to flash.
