Yeah, the speakers fit in just fine. No mods I can think of. If I had to do anything, it was pretty minor. It's been a few years, like, 4-5, since I did it. 4".
Back then, everyone was putting the JBL 527's in, so I bought those, only to find they are 5" and our bikes use 4", so I bought the 427's. I'll use the 527's in a car eventually. I have a few.
Radio is definitly the issue, no weather cover and the display is toasted, though I have seen the buttons light up on occasion so it is getting power (I know it is the radio). I have someone offering me a 1988 model radio for $15 but I wanted to know if the harnesses are still the same so I can test it at his house.

That radio have the cassette deck? All working? If you don't want it, let me know!

Thanks! Maybe I'll pick some up. Now I'm wondering, those inline amps should work for the stock sterio, shouldn't they? There are some 35w on fleabay for about $12. Would they help?
Yeah, they should help. See, the problem with amps is distortion. You want high watts at low distortion. These companies rate their amps (in the radio or externally) at so many watts. You have to seriously dig to find at what distortion they rate them at. So a higher power amp running at a fraction of it's power capability will sound better than a lower power amp running at full power, where all the distortion comes in. Then there's PEP v. RMS. RMS =0.707*PEP, and RMS is a better measure of the power. So, that 35W, what's the real spec on it? 35W RMS at what % THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)? One amp that says 35WPEP at 10% THD is going to be garbage, versus another that is 15W at .1% THD.
has good specs. I would consider one like that. See: 30W into 4 ohms, 35 into 2 (the GTO's are 2 ohm) at <0.1%THD. I dunno about the Frequency Response -10 Hz to 50 KHz (+0, -1 dB). Uh, what's a -10Hz? And 50KHz is way beyond human hearing. I am also concerned with the 15 amp fuse. What's the actual current draw when it's in use? We don't have 10 amps to spare in our electrical systems. Anyway, that looks like a good one.
