Evo Hugely Underpowered?
What happens when you lose the VOES, vacuume or switch etc? ALOT. Just another unnecessary thing to go wrong and tear up an engine. The Dyna S ignition will illiminate & solve that vacuume headache and be more dependable than any stock ignition, not to mention a preformance gain. Just saying.
Not much as it happens, the VOES is very reliable...I have never found a faulty one and you can run an Evo with it disconnected and either earthed or not earthed depending on which advance curve you want.
It isn't a destructive failure, more of a nuiscance.....lets not go scaring people just so they go and buy parts that we like.
With a bike that old that has been stored inside I would just change the oil and inspect the rubbers....most of those rubber parts last way longer than 8 years on a bike that gets ridden everyday so being stored isn't the big panic that many people make it out to be.
Have also changed one of the lines, and tyres still seem ok

I'll back up Spanners on this one, VOES is not junk, whatever you say or think! There are aftermarket ignition modules that use it and my bike was was fine with it, from new bone stock through various states of tune, for donkey's years.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, that is what makes this forum great. That being said, if the engine melted the tops of the pistons there was more going on there then the leaking VOES. either it was running way lean or was over advanced and the rider should have heard something. Neither of these conditions would be caused by a leaking VOES. I've seen VOES's with the hose off from a carb backfire and the guy ran it for quite a while before he finally brought it in and there was no damage. Spanners what do you think??? It sounds like the tune was a little off.

I would change the ignition to a dyna and dump the vacuume advance. Vacuume advance leads to many problems and poor running. Deffinatly go cam & bearings and change all the rubber hoses. Spray some either around the intake to see if it's leaking, it will rev if it is. Mostly cheap fixes. Nice bike.
If looking to establish more from an 80"er w/o breaking the bank, install either a Wood 6, or the overlooked Andrews 3, a good valve job/re-surface, tighten the squish up, and tune it.
76-80 hp, and 85-90 ft/lbs is within reach, and fuel economy will come up, as long as your not hammering on it constantly.
Have 4 of those-type builds in here now.

Saw an engine last week that was ran for some time with a leaking VOES, It had melted pistons tops. Engine needed extensive head, piston, cylinder work. So Booo. As I was stating , the Dyna S is superior to stock VOES not to mention the preformance gain. Just trying to point out what might be causing poor preformance from a bike that has been sitting and could have dry rot leaking Voes.

Sounds like your agreeing with me as stated in red. I saw this Evo engine last week and this info was described to me through my Indy who has been building racing engines 30 yrs. The pistons were melted also the heads were damaged, saw the damage myself. The point of this was the OP said he had no power so the VOES would be a good place to look since the bike could have dry rott. By the way, your bike WONT run right without SS carb
