The gear ratio on that bike is killing the performance, 25-36 primary, 32-65 final.
Add the six on top of that = turd.

IMO, I would,

Change engine srocket to 24 tooth(JP cycles,part # 603-130, $40),you'll need the Baker fat shoe, to make it work with the stock chain.

Either change to a 70t rear pulley, you'll need a 132t belt to go with that, or go with a 30t front pulley, not sure what belt for that, search the forums, it's in there somewhere.

This ratio change will let your cam, carb and ign mods come to life,

and

you might can actually use that sixth gear.

Edit, the fat shoe won't work with the older style adjuster,maybe the Baker fine pitch adjuster with fat shoe option, would work.

My parts came in. I will let you guys know how it turns out when I finish installing.

To reiterate what you guys said, I think regearing the sprocket and pulley might be a good idea as well as an air cleaner. K&N? MaxFlow?

Where's the speedo located on these old Evo's? Does it get the reading from the front wheel or the rear? If it's the front then I'm not very concerned with regearing the bike.

'96 and up Softails have the electronic speedo that takes its reading from a sensor on the tranny case that counts gear teeth moving past it.

'95 and earlier used a mechanical speedo drive off the front wheel.

How would that work if I'm changing out the gears? Will it affect the speedo and odometer?

The S&S Carb came with an air cleaner and the S&S teardrop cover. The filter looks similar to a K&N.

That just means you will be looking for 7th! I have owned bikes with 3, 4, 5 and 6 speeds and looked for another gear on every one. It's a fact of life.

Yes it will effect your speedo how much I don't know But there are fixes Dakota digital has a recalibration unit and there might be others

Your certainly correct about the false neutrals but can be overcome with a lot of tweaking. The twinkie guys will say your going backwards with the Evo but won't be long before they start asking why the heck did they come up with something like the twinkie. Nothing like Evo exhaust

I believe S&S sells speedometer recal modules as well.

Changes in the primary wont affect the speedometer, final drive changes will.

Changing the engine sprocket and chain will be the least expensive route.

A 23t would bring rpms at 70mph from about 2752 to about 3000,
close to a 3.17 final.
