Ok I'm broke down waiting on my wife to come pick up bike and me in Texas
I somehow managed to break the gears in the tranny. So while I'm waiting are there any reccomendations for the best gears to put in my 86 FLHTC?
Wow I'm sorry for not getting back on here. I really apologize. I got distracted by other people, worked on the bike a bit and then the wife showed up and I drove till 3 to get home. I am sorry I left y'all hanging.
We took the tranny cover off and the gears have broken teeth that are rattling around inside and locking things up. I won't be sure if all the damage till I get everything out and inspected. Looks like a few gears at the least possibly a whole new gear set. I was looking at the RevTec 6sp gear set that will fit in the 5 case.
Thank y'all so much.
We stopped for gas and upon leaving I gave a little more throttle than usual due to another vehicle and then there was a pop followed by grinding from the tranny with periodic locking up then all ability to shift went away. That's when we took her back to parking lot and took the cover off and discovered the gears.
Much cheaper to replace the gear set with a good used one. Buying individual gears can get very expensive. If you are planning to stick with the same clutch setup, you can use any `89 or earlier 5 speed gearset (tapered mainshaft).
If your question is about brands - stock used is gonna be your cheapest bet, and an Andrews gearset is most likely the best in terms of ability to withstand hard use, but, the Andrews stuff's gonna be a bit pricier.
