I don't like to disagree with Dan, but I would use a battery tender over winter! Agreed the drain on the battery should be zero, but if your bikes are stored in an unheated garage, as mine are, your battery will reward you with longer service life IMHO. Bikes with kick starters only need a glimmer of battery life to get them going, but a one horse power plus starter needs a hefty kick from the battery to wake up a bike that has sat a few months.
What i have found is that any lead/acid battery looses almost half of its potential when its cold . The battery tenders help with this by keeping the battery charged over an extended period of non use.
I see you live in Ohio and have winter periods of cold weather and non use of the bike as i do in my location.
What i do is remove the battery and store it in a warm dry place over the winter while giving it a trickle charge once every 2-3 months just to keep it happy. Ive found that a good quality battery will need next to nothing to keep it at peak in a warm environment .
