Most guys go from FI to carb around here. Why do you want to convert to FI?

Rent a bike similar to yours with FI, see if you're gonna like it. I did (not for FI comparison purposes though), and was very dissapointed.

Take a look at the S&S VFI system that replaces MM EFI. I suspect that will be more user friendly to fit, as it is designed for early EFI bikes. It is also more tunable than the original MM. They also make an EZFI kit. Plenty of useful info on their website.

Also use Ronnies HD website for their microfiche parts lists, where you can see original part numbers etc used on those early EFI bikes. If you decide to go with S&S you can probably put together a more modern set-up from an amalgamation of S&S and HD parts.

One thing at a time! If your bike is not running right then there is no doubt getting it tuned should improve it. I have an S&S 107" in my Evo now and have had it tuned on a dyno twice now and the improvement in the ride has been well worth it.

The carb to FI gas tank will be the hard part. The whole thing is plug and play if you gather the parts ahead of time. The job is a half day including initial tuning. You will need a programmer. Seems a fool move, but, it is your bike. I'd sell ALL of my MM EFI junk to you cheap. 1996 tank, harness, manifold and hoses, ECU. The only thungs I kept were the ECU & FUEL relays and the bracket that they mount to. (For auxiliary relays for start and headlight kill on start.)
