how hard to convert?
yes..lol
mine could be out of wack...so might just get a cam soon and upgrade the carb to run perfect....my previous 2000 fatboy carb wasnt this bad....but it was tuned with a mikuni carb also
Not sure about loosing performance (according to 97bagger you will) as I have never ridden a EFI bike.
However you will be opening yourself to very hard to diagnose problems.
There is another thread here where the guy is having a hell of a time trying to get his EFI to run right.
EFI's need special equipment to adjust and carbs need a screwdriver.
If you are smelling gas out of your carb you have a leak somewhere or have one hell of a sense of smell.
If you can get someone to put effort into tuning that carb, all three circuits can be monitored to 13.8 to 14.2 at idle, 13.8 to 14.2 midrange and 13.2 wide open throttle and will never have a gas smell. When tuners do EFI, they are shooting for these AFR's but easier to change and a little more precise than the carbs crossover points but the prehistoric carb still works on the same principle but needs set to proper AFR's. Your new bike is running at 14.6 which is lean and creates heat to burn crap mandated by EPA that said is not good for treehuggers, the 14.6 will live in a stock Evo but installing a compression building cam will be a ping monster and take a chance on sticking a piston, that is why 14.2 becomes a target and I personnaly tune the White Bike to 13.8 idle and midrange with compression and burns clean so many variables apply to gas smells.
If you have the ability to install a EFI system on the 98 then might want to do some plug reading and tinker with the carb jets/needles/mixture screw and read those plugs to a leaner condition and should take care of the gas smell.
If the 98 was a factory carb bike, you can't change to EFI because there is no hole in the case for a crank sensor and the flywheel doesn't have timing grooves in the crank for referance to fire the injectors. If it was a factory EFI, let us know and get you moving
On the question of performance, a prepped CV or Mikuni will outperform a early EFI with mild to wild mods done to the engine, the M&M is good for stock but doesn't stay with mods well, I tried it and after installing a carb, the M&M was a bottleneck and a EFI guy but calling a spade a spade

thanks....1997bagger....I will just have it tuned up...or upgrade to a better carb...
I don't need a lot of power as I will just cruise around...so I don't need expensive mods...
I sold my 2009 cause didn't ride enough to warrant the expense...I bought this 98 for 5200 bucks so learning another animal...it needs cosemetic work...which I plan to change one thing at a time...
