Default miss shift down shifting

got a 98wide glide stock except for pipes and intake. when down shifting from 5th gear to 4 th gear it will occassionally go from 5th past 4th to neutral between 3 rd and 4 th. doesn't happen all of the time, just enough to be a pain in the a$$. any thoughts on what is going on withthis? does not happen goin up through the gears.

had this happen to me a couple times recently too, although on the upshift from 3rd to 4th (usually WOT screwing around getting on the highway). almost like it pops out of gear. gotta downshift and then upshift. nearly shat first time it happened (i swear i heard the valves float lol...was already @ 6500rpm when it happened)

I suspect not having a good positive foot movement on shifter may be causing this.Any hesitation when shifting can make it hop a gear sometimes.

There's a neutral between 3rd and 4th? I'd have someone check that out. Maybe you're not pushing it down hard or far enough, to get it past that "neutral" spot.

I have a neutral there too. Happens often. The other day I taped down 3 or 4 times, got a good click every time, but no drive. I blame it on my *****-footing.

Check that the linkage is not binding.

Check the shift lever at the transmission, make sure it is tight to the shaft and is not slipping.

Check that the shifter pawl is properly adjusted.

Well, in my case. The shift lever at the tranny was real sloppy when I got the bike 7+ years ago. Took it to a guy in town, paid him $300 to replace the lever, same issue. (He burned me for another $300 later for another problem), but I was able to push the lever on in a certain position and got a good bite on it. 7 years later, it's still holding, baffles the heck out of me. Linkage is fine. Pawl I adjusted years ago. Tranny behaves like it always has, I'm just light on the toe, mostly because of the tranny/linkage issue. When I lose that bite, I'll have to do some tranny work.

I had this happen to me too.

I pulled the tranny and took it to the dealer and they went through it.
Couldn't find anything wrong so I just put it back into the bike.

It works fine till I try to shift it hard (dropping a gear at high rpm's to pass and hitting the throttle hard).

I just ride it easier now.
