When I originally got my Sporty, third gear was finnicky. Shifting into first and second gear were normal. Then I would shift up and I would be stuck in 'neutral'. I could easily shift back down into second. After a few seconds, it would clank hard into third.
Fired it up today for the first time in I dunno, a month or two or so. Took her out for probably a half hour after filling up fluids and doing a general checkup. I soon realized that third gear is gone. I shift into first, second, shift into third but it's a 'neutral', but it doesn't pop into fourth. I can easily shift up into fourth or back into second. So the 'position' is there, there's just no gear.
I know I'm going to be pulling the tranny, but any ideas of what exactly I may be looking for?
There is a itty-bitty brass "hat" in the shift pawl that has wore out. Ironheads are notorious for this. DO NOT PUSH IT!!! Another thing Ironheads are notorious for is spitting third gear through the case when you have this condition. It's a $0.30 part, but you have to spend a couple hundred to get to it....or doit yourself.

Cool, thanks bud. So should I not ride it at all, or is it alright as long as I shift easy?
I've gotta get ahold of a a diagram so I can find this part. I will probably be tearing into it in a month or two.
