The price was right at the time.

Truth to tell, when I bought mine, it was what Harley was building at the time. The Twin-cam was years in the future.

I've kept mine because:

1. It's paid for.

2. I appreciate the relative simplicity and ease of maintenance of the Evo, as well as its classic good looks and unbroken lineage back to the knucklehead of 1936.

3. I've never really warmed to the Twin-cam motor. I still think the pressed together flywheel assembly and chain driven cams are a giant step backward.

4. I'd love to have a panhead, but I can't afford to pay collector's prices for one, so I'll be happy with my "poor man's panhead".

I had enough banked to buy a pretty nice TC bagger and went with the Evo.
For me it's the difference between Z06 and L88 Corvettes. Yeah the Z06 is a beautiful car, quick, nimble, etc. Light years ahead of the L88 in performance and handling. But the L88 is a work of art, sounds bad a$$, is bad a$$, a true hot rod from a bygone era. A regular guy could work on an L88 in his garage, make it better without sacrificing his kids college funds on it. Say any of that about a Z06 or a newer Harley. There's something about electronics that makes me want to puke. It's just to much punk kid tuner crap.
Evos and Shovels remind me of old school hot rods. I love the way mine shakes in it's frame. I love the way it sounds. It reminds me of an old school hot rod with a lumpy bumpy cam.
I did look for a mid 90's Evo, but fell head over heels for my '90. And I've made it 10 times better than it was when I purchased it. It's getting tough to find new aftermarket parts for the older ones, but it's worth it.

I like mine simply because I have a huge hatred for new stuff and I like the fact that it took some work and effort to get mine in the shape it is. Doesn't mean I am against technology. Just the way I am. Case in point my next project will be a mid 90's bronco to rework inside and out and have as my daily driver and kid hauler. Some people have twinkies and minivans. I will take my old EVO and Bronco Just the way I am. Money has zero to do with it. I got the cash just don't care for the new.

And also EVO's are BAD *** as well. That has a a lot to do with it!!

For me, riding an EVO is riding a classic that looks and runs just as good by today's standards than it did when new. I haven't ridden many TCs, but I have yet to ride one that has the same feel as an EVO.

The one piece non-serviceable crank, failing cam chain tensioners, fool infection, ugly cam chest of the twinkie are why I have an Evo. Tired of constant top end rebuilds on my troublehead after 250,000 miles, it was time for an upgrade. Not downgrade.

The bigger back tire is the only thing I like about them. I wish I had one on my bike...like a 200.

Why?
They don't last any longer and cost a bunch more.
