Hi, have a 1985 evo 1340 that needs a new ignition kit, complete. Motor runs till it gets hot then cuts out and just cant source the problem. Just looking as to which way to go . Easy to install and maintain. Cheers
You probably only need a new pick up. Two ways of testing. First is get it running and then aim a heat gun at the nose cone (ign cover) if it cuts out once the cone is at operating temp then its the pick up.
The other way is the reverse, run it til it cuts out and than fire a co2 fire extinguisher at the nose cone and see if it will restart.
This will eliminate it being the coil.
Pick up is a common prob and it usually gives your symptoms.
The other test is to leave to to cool down naturally and if it restarts it is still likely to be the pick up but the CO2 test is more area specific and heaps of fun to do!
Best if you pull the points cover and the plate behind it so you can expose the pick up and give it a quick burst. A can of compressed air is nearly as good if you keep it in the fridge for a few hours before doing the test.
Radio Shack and other stores that carry electronic repair equipment sell freeze spray for that purpose. More economical and accurate, but admittedly not as much fun as discharging a fire extinguisher.
