Default voltage regulator ????s

so to start this off im assuming that im having a vr problem. coming home from a short trip I stopped and talked with a friend with the bike running and could smell a sulfurish sent. didn't think anything of it till later. got almost home and the bike started missing not able to keep rpms up head light went out came back dim, couldn't get up to speed. limped it home. got home dead batt. so im thinking that vr cooked the batt. im I on the right trac or any other input. btw 99 heritage

Slap a volt meter on and see what voltage you get across the battery as you rev the motor.

Over 15v means its over charging (this can destroy the battery) and under 12v means its not charging at all.

If under charging you'll need to check the stator output before assuming its the VR.

First charge the battery and then have it load tested at your local auto shop.

If the battery passes then install it and run Dr hess's checking charging system procedure (in sticky at top of the page)

If it doesn't pass then get a new one and then run the test.

You have to have a good battery installed to do the test.

just went through this the sticky was precise and a big help

First rule, when there is any doubt about the charging system, is to read Dr Hess's sticky, as referred to above! It saves us old hands from rewriting the same advice over and over - oh, darn - I just did that......

so I ended up getting a new bat. tested with full charge to start. had 16.8 at idle and went up to 18.9 at about 2500. stator didn't go to ground ohms was ok.

Looks like a new regulator is in your future.

You'll wreck that battery in short order with those numbers! Read Dr Hess's sticky....
