Bungo.
Do you have any pics of the rust spots exposed?

Some pics. of area affected. Main area is around S/Arm Bracket other rust surface only. Pic.5 shows inside of area affected and was photographed from other side (r/h). I am sure the best suggestion was to obtain a "section" from an old frame and have it welded in with inner dia. tubes for strength.
Almost impossible to obtain a section from a FLHTC over here in UK.
All suggestions & comments much appreciated Bungo

Wasn't there a pic previously of the frame rusted through? That would need fixin'.

As someone mentioned, there's HD junk yards ("breakers") in the US that would sell you that section. Typically what happens is someone turns left in front of a bike, the accident results in the front end being pushed back, bending the frame at the neck. The repair shop cuts the neck off, sends the neck to Harley who then sends the repair shop a new frame with the original numbers. The shop now has a new frame and the old frame with the piece you need and no neck.

Although, as THC sez, if the frame is not rusted through and it's just surface rust, then it's not as bad as we thought and thorough cleaning and paint may fix it.

Oh, they say "Keep Fayetteville Funky." I guess that makes me Southeast of Funky.

a good media blasting to see if there's any weak spots, if not a good coat of a rust converter an paint an good to go.

I could show you my welded frame (in the evening I could make pics), but I have no pics before fixing. Rust on my bike's frame was similar, except the frame tube - it wasn't rust through.
But I think - experienced welder can weld your frame, then grind seams and finish it so the technical inspection will not be able to spot it (if you have inspections in Scotland; -we have to pass inspection every 2 years on motorcycles)

There is only fresh air below that lower thread insert! I suspect the frame tube is fine, but part of the added fillet that holds the insert has gone away with the fairies......

We have annual inspections in the UK, but you are right about doing a sound repair so it passes. They will undoubtedly notice the rusty hole, less likely to notice nice fresh paint on solid-looking metal!

Hi Doc,After removing gearbox and s/arm I have had a really good look at the area in question. Wow,its bad. Rusted right through and very dangerous
if I had ridden much further this summer. Swinging arm spindle and S/arm hanging by a thread on this side of the bike. I will be posting some new pics. tomorrow to let all see how bad it is. I am almost certain it will be an added "section" as you suggested. Not sure where to start searching for one in the US. Any suggestions much appreciated. Bungo
