As stated , swing arms are usually pretty tough units and not prone to breakage unless the rider is thrashing the bike constantly or road salt is left to accumulate on the top surface of the arms and not washed off before winter storage.
If the break is a " snap off " of the unit at a particular spot , it can be welded . If the break is the result of corrosion/rot you should replace the unit .
Are you the original owner or is there some history on the bike?
The original factory axle tension piece is more of a lollipop style i believe for that year.
Yours looks more like a block which was an aftermarket item i believe i saw in a motorcycle magazine many years ago.
Is it possible that it had lowering blocks ?
Seen reports of this but it always equates back to lowering blocks.
I TIG'ed it, plated the top and bottom and added a stiffener. Seems to be fine. No one ever wrenchs on my bikes but last month while I was doing the dragon I picked up a rock in the belt and had a dealer replace it, my guess is they over tighten the axle. BTW stock, not lowered, and as for the adjusting blocks I added them a while back only due to all of the failure reports on the forums. Thanks for all your comments.
