95 Heritage, Adding 6 speed, cam, compression
First, here are the details of my bike:
1995 Heritage Softail Classic.
Bone stock except for chrome front sliders, progressive suspension rear shocks, and since the previous owner completed removed the baffles from the stock exhausts, I added in baffles from big city thunder (excellent improvement by the way). I think my handlebars are from a newer Heritage because they seem taller than on other FLSTC's of this age and look about the height of some of the newer ones.
I just completed a little trip to New Orleans and back and the bike was great, but like anything, I learn from what I am doing and try to figure out how to make it better.
Overall I am satisfied with the bike's power and sound. Of course, more is always better, but what the hell. This isn't a race bike.
My number one thing about this trip is I need to lower the rpm's. Back when this bike was designed and built, speed limits were not as high as they are now. As a result, my engine rpm's are a little higher than my liking when I am on the interstate. I don't have a tachometer, but I could just tell by the noise and the buzz.
Yes. The damn buzz. I stopped somewhere to pee, and my hands felt like they had spider webs on them when I stopped because they got sort of numb I guess because I am getting a buzz from the elevated rpm's.
I do not want to change the teeth on my sprocket to lower the rpm's on the interstate because that would also hurt my acceleration around town.
I believe the solution I am looking for is Harley's drop in six speed gear set. It doesn't replace the whole transmission. It's Part Number: 33100-03A.
I am planning on getting this done at an independent shop because I have neither the time nor the skills to install it.
From what I have been reading, the stock 80 inch Evolution may not be up to the task. I have been reading on this forum and all over the internet about options. Remember, I am not looking to race this bike so huge horsepower numbers at high rpm's are not important at all. I actually ride slower than most people.
I was thinking if I can improve the low to mid range rpm's of my engine, then that would work well with the six speed since it will lower my rpm's on the interstate.
That has lead me to think the following parts and modifications would be appropriate.
Andrews EV13 cam
adjustable chromoly pushrods
maybe a fresh set of lifters since it an older bike?
dynojet kit for the carburetor
have the heads milled for 9.0 or 9.25 compression
replacement ignition module (not sure what to get or if this is even necessary)
Do you guys think that set up would work well with the six speed? Is there something else I should be looking at?
I have bolded the two main items that I am not sure about.
I am trying to do this on a bang for the buck type of budget. I am single and live alone quietly. I make a pretty good living and can afford lots of craziness, but would rather do this sort of on the cheap but without being so cheap that I get crappy results.
Thanks in advance.
What is the price on that part number. Uncle google is showing me retail?
Ask John at miacycles about the $600 ultima drop in 6 speed. He has lotsa experience with them and can give you honest, real world advice.
If he okays it then you're budget jut got lots more comfy, no?

The other mods however have potential!
I've got a few thoughts about cams/carbs/compression, but they would take quite a bit of bandwidth, to pontificate upon.
Here what I did:
V Thunder 3020 cam
Hi flow air filter
Kerker crossover dual pipes
and installed a 34 tooth pulley
Make sure it's a steel pulley not an aluminum one
(my 95, came stock with a 32 and 65 rear)

A Evo with a OD trans will need more engine or it will be useless because of needing to downshift everytime when needing to throttle. Will a EV13 get that alone I don't think it will but like I said this is personal preferance.
The Ultima OD for the softail is a low budget swap and was considering one until I came across a Baker OD which is another level. Mia(John) has had great experiance with the Ultima on installs and in his own bike.
My situation is different with the White Bike due to I run pure gearing giddy up @ 360 final and use the 6th gear to back to what a normal 5th gear would be. You are basically trying to set up what today's smaller cube Twinkees are and 6th gear is bogging down unless you are flying and a repair for that is a expensive trip through the engine aftermarket or dropping the trans sprocket 1 tooth and puts 6th back into a sweet spot and still have lower rpm's at cruise than the 5 speed set up.
Breaking it down:
EV13 with a 6 speed OD, will work but going to be close to a flat power area but will get into a 65-70 mph range to drop rpm's
EV13 with a 6 speed OD, drop the trans sprocket 1 tooth to get into a power area in 6th which is a common mod in smaller cube Twinkies and helps with base accelleration in lower gears
EV13 with a 5 speed, change the trans sprocket up 1 tooth which will drop some rpm's at cruise as your targeting but will lose slight giddy up but budget minded
Gear sets:
Ultima OD6 budget priced, gets the job done but a China product if that bothers you, need to change the nuetral switch with this.
Ulitima complete OD6 trans for a softail with a warranty for peace of mind, bolt in, China product but probaly the best budget mod
Rivera Primo OD6, quality products and around $1000 last time I checked
Rev Tech OD6, doesn't have a good name in trans products
Baker OD6, heads above the rest but will need to sell a kidney
S&S OD6, they have one and quality products but hard to find

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Baker trans are expensive but mine falls in and out of gear silently, no clunks compared to today's factory 6 speeds, Bakers are you get what you pay for.
You started off budget minded and just blew that out of the water with the Baker website, let us know, we love spending other peoples money on here - It is our motto
I think the total price including labor and engine modification that I am shooting for is less than $3,500.
I bought this bike for $8,000 about five years ago and it's been great.
I usually just ride around town and on short day trips on scenic roads at moderate speeds. I am happy with my gearing and ratios for all of that. It's the occasional excursion onto the interstate like from Lafayette Louisiana to New Orleans that I am not happy with. So, that's the reason I am not wanting to do anything that would mess with my low speed performance and acceleration. I surely don't want to end up with an overall ratio that lugs the engine at ridiculously low rpm's.
Right now, the bike feels great at 60 mph and is ok at 65. At 70, the vibes start and by 80 it's a buzz and the engine is screaming.
I wonder if the previous owner changed sprockets or something?
What I did find when I first bought it was the stock exhausts had all the baffles completely removed. Not only was the bike loud on the highway, it had crappy acceleration. When I realized that's what was wrong, I put in big city thunder baffles and it did the trick.
