so this is what both cylinder walls look like after only about 500 miles... they're not gouged, just very lightly scored
the only conclusion i can come to is that because the cylinder studs were all virtually stripped, and wasn't getting a proper torque on them, they vibrated?
the pistons look very similar
any ideas

There will always be marks on the jugs if the motor has been run....remember, the pistons make the return journey 2-3,000 times a minute and over 500 miles that is 1.8 million times if cruising for 500 miles.
With a better picture I might make more of a drama of the situation but I don't often pull jugs off after 500 miles so its difficult to compare with anything.
Damn, hate when that happens.
That could have happened on initial start up if it was not heat cycled, or, more than likely, too tight of piston to wall clearance from the get-go.
Or maybe like you said about the studs, get a mic in there to find out.
Either way, looks like the piston grew too large for the cylinder.
