In those days, Harley didn't use powder coat, they used black wrinkle paint. Powder coating didn't come along until '96, when they began milling the edges of the cylinder and head fins square on the edges.

My original '94 motor was wrinkle painted, and required regular touch-up beginning at 5 years of age. The remanufactured engine is powder coated and looks like new after 12 years.

Well, most of my wrinkle coat is gone, just enough left to make it look like ****. Oh well, like the OP said, to hell with looks. I'm old, fat and bald, and my bike is old and .....

Just to be clear... The Motor on this bike was NOT painted or powder coated, it is stock base cast metal. Nothing fancy. I like it, no worry.

I know, I've seen them. I like black on my blue, but the black is tough to keep on.

Dig, for real this is the Last Harley I will ever own. I am winding down, I have been blessed to have owned well over 100 motorcycles, like about 140 that I can remember, 30+ Harley bikes and most every other that I ever wanted. It seems real that I end my days on a bike from my prime. A bike I know inside and out that I can always work on and will always be there, EVO Forever. I will not ever buy another Harley. Why would I? I have had them all. I know this bike will run after I am gone. My riding days are few but I will keep this bike forever till it has squarewheels. Yep. When you get old you can say stuff like that. I still have my 1970s wife and my 1980s Chevy Truck. Besides no one would ever buy a 20 year old Harley with 100,000 ++ miles anyway, guess I am stuck HA, LOL.
