TIME TO REPLACE THE BATTERY IN THE HERITAGE. WHAT ARE YOU USING OR HAPPY WITH. ARE THE WALLY WORLD BATTERIES THEY SELL ANY GOOD. I KNOW YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, WHAT PRICES ALSO IF AVAILABLE.
My batteries tend to have a two year life span no matter what where I get them from. Once the hit that...Well, it's only a matter of time before the bike dies and no matter what ya' ain't gonna get it running again until a new one is installed.
That being said, I'm currently using a HD sealed battery (had to replace the two year old one that died on the road). Of all the different makes: Drag Specialties, AC Delco, Sears, etc that I've used...It just seems that the HD batteries crank the motor better. Really wish I could find one that I like that was cheaper.
Odyssey jell batteries...
Best batteries I have ever owned. They have a 7 year guarantee but I have had one last for 11 years. The last one I bought cost me (new) $75.00 on ebay. The great thing about these, besides the longevity, is you stick them in the bike and forget about them. No more winter storage battery tender. Example... when I parked my bike for winter it had 12.7 volts, 3 months later it has 12.6 volts even with the temperatures getting down to negative numbers for a month. They are good, I would never even consider another acid battery.
I also run the gel battery. I do tender it in the winter.
Just spent the whole day today cleaning the bike, to get it
started (since last November) the motor didn't turn over 3-4
times before it started. I like them.
I went looking to see if H-D does have a gel battery and found no information regarding that question but I did find a good description of the 2 different types:
AGM and Gel Batteries AGM and Gel Batteries are typically mistaken for one another. Here are some points that will help clarify the difference: [ul][*]Absorbed Glass Matt construction - allows the electrolyte to be suspended in close proximity with the plates active material. Enhances both the discharge and recharge efficiency for maximum engine performance.[*]AGM batteries are a variant of Sealed VRLA batteries.[*]Great for high-performance engine starting, power sports, deep cycle, solar and storage battery needs.[*]The AGM batteries are typically good deep-cycle batteries and deliver the best life engine performance if recharged before the battery drops below a 50% discharge rate.[*]If AGM batteries are discharged to a rate of 100%, the cycle life will be 300 plus cycles. This is true of most AGM batteries rated as deep-cycle batteries. [/ul] Gel Batteries The gel cell is similar to the AGM style because the electrolyte is suspended, but different because technically the AGM battery is still considered to be a wet cell. In addition: [ul][*]The electrolyte in a GEL cell has a silica additive that causes it to set up or stiffen.[*]The recharge voltages on this type of cell are lower than the other styles of lead acid battery.[*]Probably the most sensitive cell in terms of adverse reactions to over-voltage charging.[*]Best used in VERY DEEP cycle applications and may last a bit longer in very hot weather applications.[*]If the incorrect battery charger is used on a Gel Cell battery, poor engine performance and premature failure is certain. [/ul]
Three years ago...my HD battery crapped out. I parked for about an hour to relax....got on the bike and it was totally dead. It would not jump start from another bike either...DEAD.
I ended up buy a battery from Autozone...I believe it says MagnaPower on it. I had no other options while being on the road. There were no motorcycle shops or any other automotive stores around. I think I paid something like $50 and it has a three year warranty. I figured, if the battery dies somewhere...pull into any Autozone and get it replaced.
Thanks rudedog, I've learned something today. I would say wherever you buy a battery from, make it a place that sells them fairly quickly. I have seen some walmarts that the motorcycle batteries look like they have been on the shelf for three years. You want a fresh one.
