i like these old school bikes. really like the copper color shovel with the apes.
I'm with you on that one....I am trying to get the cash together to buy a Shovel as a 2nd bike.
There were a couple of shovels in the show that I built the gearboxes on....it was amazing how many people were there that I have either sold or bought parts from, or fixed their bikes
spanners, those ratchet tops can accept the 5 speed guts, right? That would be a worthy upgrade as a lot of buddies with 74" and even the 80" just are uncomfortable on the highways at sustained speeds because of the 4 speeds being at 4000 rpm at 70 mph.
hey John, misspent youth? never heard of it. lol!

Not sure about that to be honest but I doubt it because of the way the layshaft is assembled.

wrong, completely different boxes
5 speed completely different box and a lot easier to work on
fitting a 5 speed box into a 4 speed frame can be done, have this set up on one of my bikes with 86 softail box bolted into a 4 speed shovel frame
it all bolts in with standard parts (not necessarily from the same year) except the inner primary needs to be machined out to take a larger bearing as 5 speed output shaft is 30mm rather than 1"
