got the basic 86 FLHT

basically a good bike, engines in pre 88 evo's rumoured to be better than the later models

pre 90 clutch not really up to the job but Kevlar / carbon fibre plates help

early keihin carb not that great but later CV / mikuni / S&S rectify this

open up the exhaust and mild drop in cam and you will have a great bike to do a lot of miles on

Call Harleys customer service in Milwaukee. With the VIN Number they can give you all the information (colors, production numbers and verify it is a liberty edition) over the phone and also e-mail you the same. I did this for my 1978 1/2 75th anniversary electraglide. It only took a couple of minutes and they were very helpful.

That model was only available in one colour scheme, black over silver with red lines. Back then Harley only made around 40k bikes a year, they make roughly ten times that many now. There were not many colours for any model and that one is a special, with pretty well every option as stock. IIRC it has four gauges in the batwing, when only two was normal then.

My tourpak came off one of those bikes. Someone had already chopped the bike and I bought its mortal remains, although the tourpak was the only part worth using. Despite living in the UK I collected almost three dollars in small coins from under the floor, plus a lot of other small items!

Wink

Here ya go, from an ad on Craigslist:

"In 1986, Harley-Davidson decided to join the efforts in raising money to help with the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Harley built only 1,750 Liberty Edition motorcycles which included an Electra Glide Classic, XLH1100 Sportster, and FXRS Low Rider. For every one of these bikes sold, Harley Davidson donated $100 to help with the costs of restoring the iconic American landmark. All of the bikes featured graphics of the Statue of Liberty on the gas tank and front fenders. The Electra GlideŽ Classic Liberty edition was limited to 810 total motorcycles produced, and 62 of the units were equipped with a sidecar, bringing the total number of Electra GlideŽ Classic two wheeled versions to 748."

Those production numbers are consistent with a MoCo that was very much smaller back then! There is also a graphic on top of the tourpak.

86 had a 1 year only fairing inner and all 86's had the four small gauges, these went to 2 gauges on the 87 models as one of hd's many product improvements (read cost cutting ideas)

Question Limited Edition....

Thanks for the background....

No statue on the tank and color is different too.

Gonna need to call the MoCo and get some detailed info.

Will update as soon as I know what it really is......

I'll be back.

Go to the 'Owners' tab on the MoCo website, where you can enter the VIN and get the build data of your bike. What is there about it that suggests it is a Liberty edition? Can you post pics for us, so we can get a better idea for you?
