Front sprocket is fine.

He did tell me the chain was about 3 years overdue for a new one.

Stock sprocket wouldn't go 250K. 25K would be pushing it. Definitely time for new front, rear and a chain, if you want it done right.

I just called my friend and he said it was an after market sprocket.
Not sure what kind or how long it has been on the bike.

I've seen missing teeth in the distant past. That suggests the other sprocket is also knackered (that's a technical term indicating excess wear!) and it deserves close inspection, before spoiling a new chain.
