EVO Pinging
are you useing high octane gas-92 or 93?
I went to useing better gas and a crane cam 310, made a
big difference, doesn't ping at all anymore.
Ihave a 99 evo with a crane Hi4 single fire ing.It has the option of running one of two ing settings,VOES & Race.Just for $hits & giggles I put it on the VOES setting (nominal advance curve) & it started pinging like nobodys buisness. While on VOES I advanced the timming trim pot & the pinging declined ,but was still there.Went back to Race mode,"retarted" timming trim pot & the ping stop alltogether & picked up some bottom end torque in the process. The race mode ,I suppose has a more agressive advance curve.
By the way, I'm getting an almost "perfect" burn on my spark plugs in race.IMO
I have read that if you increase the VOES setting it will eliminate the problem of pinging with engines that have been modified and have higher compression.

I removed my VOES, dug out the cone as described and turned in the screw about 1/2 turn which raised it a from about 6 to a little above 7
The bike ran and seemed OK but because of the rain, I only ran it a couple miles.
I also ordered a new VOES set at 7 from http://www.daytona-twintec.com/model_1005.html#paypal

Harbor Freight Tools web site has a cheap vacuum pump with guage on sale (16.99?) and they have the Mighty Mac on sale for $29.99 in the Harbor Freight stores if you want to spend more. I also think the local stores will honor the web site prices if you take in a printout of the web page.
If this doesn't work I will try using "race mode" with my Hi4 as described above. I am not concerned about losing a little power, just want to be able to cruise around without worry that something going wrong. On ours, pinging was more pronounced after cruising a while at lower rpms, which fit the description of having the VOES set too low for the current engine status.

The quality of gas (it seems) isn't what it used to be 'back in the day' when high compression engines ruled the road. Most people I've talked to say a 'mild increase' to 9-9.5:1 (stock is 8.5:1)is the best solution for performance on an EVOand the ability to run pump premium gas.
