Default cleaning the case halves.

Rebuilding an old 1990 evo.
Mechanicals are one thing but the aluminum parts and cases look terrible.
Anyone out there know the " best " way to refurbish a really nastie looking old thumper with rebuilt internals .?
Shes gonna haul fine but she sure is ugly.

Find a machinist in your town who vapor blasts parts, remove all studs first or coating on studs will be removed and they will rust.

All good but what do you do to ensure that the bearings and races left in the case halves dont get contaminated with the soil from wet cleaning and the residual from the blasting ?
Dont get this ?

they need to be naked the cases, has to be before any attempt to blast with anything

the steel studs can stay - but all bolt holes need a junk bolt in all the threads // as media will clog the threads and add hours to the cleaning, and the risk of braking off a tap in one of the threads, getting a broken sezed bolt out is one thing getting a tap out is another

hope that helps -- jz

Heard that ... the last time i had a glass blast done on a Honda 750 motor , it turned into a friggen nightmare as the guy did not do the correct prep. and i had a damned mess on my hands after.!
My Harley engine guy says he knows how to do things right ,? I certinaly hope he does as it will make or break this whole engine rebuild !!!
Glass particules left over in a split crankcase means a very early death for a rebuilt motor !
Am i freaking a bit ... your damned right i am ...?!
