Default Rear axle nut question

I noticed on my 1988 FLHTC that the rear axle nut is not castelated. It is just a big lock nut and I don't see that the axle was ever drilled for a castle nut. Is this the way these models were? I sure would feel better with a castle nut and a cotter key.

According to my parts manual, the `88 models used:

Axle 41110-79A (this axle is drilled for a cotter pin)

Hex nut P/N 7986

Washer P/N 6655

Lock washer P/N 7022

They changed the axle nut setup for `89:

Axle 41110-79A

Castle nut P/N 7987

Spacer 5756

Get the axle (same for many years), nut and spacer for `89 and you will be good to go.

your bike uses a nut, lock washer than a flat washer, and it does not come loose if you torque it in place -- i have installed a NY lock in place of the nut and lock washer, and if you use a new one each time the ( ny lock ) it will never fall off or come loose -- johnjzjz

Mine is the same...just a flat washer, lock washer and normal nut.

At 60lbs of clamping pressure it has not come loose in 25 years. I will swap to a castellated nut one day as its a requirement for racing, but thats the only reason I'll be doing it.

I thought about drilling the axle and getting a castle nut. I usually add a drop (or two) of blue Locktite to the threads when I reinstall the nut. It's not come lose since I've had it but, it doesn't seem like the best design I've ever seen.

250,000 kms and its yet to come loose

castelated nut is an engineering overkill and its not necessary
