Good evening guys. Im hoping someone can help me out here. Im changing the starter on a 1985 FXWG. I got the old one out and im about to put the new one in but there is no hot wire that goes to the starter at all. How does that work? If there is no power to the starter how does it spin?

photo up the original and what your trying to install and the guys will sort it out for you
Well we got the new starter installed. Put new wires from the solenoid to the battery and starter. I cant find for the life of me where the small wire on the solenoid was hooked to and now there is no power to the ignition switch. The wiring on this thing is about to be redone from front to back. This weekends ride will be made with a wrench kept in my pocket to fire her up with.

CAUTION :: this could turn out real bad as the conections being incorect can cause it to go on fire if you did not install the wiring to the correct terminals
STOP DO not connect the battery -- DO you have the factory BOOK ??????? do you have the correct wire diagram for that 1988 bike and the correct model
I have all of the connections right from the battery to the solenoid and solenoid to the starter. I have a wiring diagram that i blew up so its a little easier to read. When i leave work at noon im bringing all of the connections and wire home with me and redoing the entire bike. All i need to run is the brake light and headlight as far as lights go. I will also have a good friend that used to work at Deep South Choppers in Baton Rouge there giving me a hand so everything should be fine.
You came to the right place. I rewired my 85 completely. Let me know if you have specific questions. As stated above disconnecting the battery is a must. There are things on that bike that can chew your fingers off and burn down your house. I suggest a quick disconnect on the negative terminal until everything works correctly.
I dont know why it was changed. It was in the bike when i bought it. I agree though, the kicker looks awesome and is a great convo piece. We rode all day today and yeterday and it was a blast.
