When mine still had the vacuum petcock I just got a 4' long piece of 1/4" fuel line and siphoned it out of the gas tanks into a gas can.

Toss that stock petcock and get a non-vacuum Pingle.
This is how you do it, siphon out the gas and get a pingle... Job over and done...

Hi all

Thank you very much for all the valuable advice, much appreciated! I like the idea of replacing the vacuum valve with something more conventional.

What do I do with the little vacuum pipe that comes from somewhere near the carburetor? Just block it off and tug it away?

Cheers

KC

You can just plug it. My vacuum line had a tee in it and also went to the VOES. I took out the tee and just plugged it straight into the VOES.

This is exactly what I ended up doing. I figured that if I could get the fuel to run out fast it would bring all the dirt with it. If I drained it slowly the dirt would stay behind.

I managed it with minimum mess, and was rather surprised to find that my tank was reasonably clean inside. The fuel valve filter was still clean as well. I also removed the cross-over to check the pipe while I had it all apart.

I phoned around but was unable to find a new fuel valve locally, so I replaced the original for now. I will have to ship a new replacement valve from the USA. I don’t like this vacuum setup.

Thanks again for all the advice and comments. It cleared things up for me.

Cheers

KC

Those $20/$40 petcocks may work for some but they are junk and will leak because they are not designed with quality in mind. I can say this after 2 different Drag Specialty and one other even more expensive ($60) el cheapos. Time wasted. Much gas spilled.

I now have a $129 Pingel and it's the quaility you want too.

The Pingel has a nylon block that turns to the openings for main and reserve. They are very reliable and will outlast 3 cheap ones.

The cheap ones use a rubber grommet with holes in it. The rubber tends to turn soft with today's gas and melt then leak right out the front of the valve.

They are not that expensive at Jireh. Markup at the indys must be pretty good on these.
